We?re seeking a collaborative and adaptable Genetic Counselor I who is comfortable working independently while also contributing as part of a supportive team environment. The Genetic Counselor I will provide genetic counseling following established genetic counseling practice guidelines in a cancer genetics setting. The Genetic Counselor I will be responsible for seeing patients in multiple clinics, including main campus and other affiliates. Any combination of academic education, professional training, or relevant work experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the responsibilities of the role will be considered. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit and cost. Ensures proper completion of counseling paperwork. Responsible for the communication of both normal and abnormal results and coordinating appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist and/or supervising physician. May provide case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling. Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; makes referrals for ongoing care and support. Acts as consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients. Responsible for analyzing the intake information and determining if appropriate appointments have been scheduled. Interacts and communicates regular with the medical geneticist(s) and/or supervising physician(s). Participates in regular staff meetings; works to establish her/himself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary. Provides genetic counseling in accordance w/applicable standards of professional care. Attends continuous education courses, attends meetings, and reviews medical literature. Stays current in GC field. Qualifications Requirements Master?s Degree in Genetic Counseling. ABGC eligible or certified (or equivalent). Expected to obtain ABGC/ABMG certification. Must hold a California Genetic Counseling license prior to start date. Experience Open to new graduates with zero to two (0-2) years? experience in genetic counseling. Ability to work independently. Demonstrates refined analytic and diagnostic reasoning skills. Ability to clearly explain complex medical information in both verbal and written form.
