Job Description

As a Pharmacy Technician Trainee at Giant Eagle, you will begin your career in the healthcare and medical services field by supporting the daily operation of our in-store pharmacy while learning under the direct supervision of licensed pharmacists and experienced pharmacy technicians. In this entry-level role, you will provide friendly, efficient customer service to patients and shoppers, greet customers at the pharmacy counter, and assist with receiving and processing prescription orders. You will learn to accurately enter prescription information into the pharmacy computer system, count and package medications, print and apply labels, and prepare prescriptions for pharmacist verification, always maintaining a high standard of accuracy, confidentiality, and safety. Working in the pharmacy department of our supermarket, you will help manage pharmacy inventory by stocking shelves, rotating products to ensure proper dating, checking for out-of-date items, and assisting with ordering and receiving medications and supplies. You will support the team in maintaining a clean, organized, and compliant work area that meets all regulatory, safety, and company standards. Under guidance, you will be introduced to basic insurance and third-party processing, assisting with gathering insurance information from patients, communicating coverage issues, and helping resolve basic questions to support timely prescription processing. Customer interaction is a key part of this role. You will answer phones, take messages for the pharmacist, and help customers with over-the-counter product location and basic questions, always referring clinical or therapeutic questions to the pharmacist. You will operate the point-of-sale system to ring up prescriptions and retail items, handle cash and electronic payments, apply discounts where appropriate, and follow proper procedures for controlled substances, returns, and confidential records. Throughout your training, you will be expected to protect patient privacy by adhering to HIPAA and company policies and to represent Giant Eagle’s commitment to a customer-first experience with courtesy, professionalism, and respect.
