JOB DESCRIPTION
Medication Aide
Qualifications:
Medication Certificate from an accredited school.
Genuine interest in Geriatric Nursing.
Adequate knowledge of pharmacology and administration of medicine.
Good judgement in interpreting physician’s orders.
Ability to maintain a good working relationship with other personnel.
Job Functions:

Job Responsibilities:
Working under the general direction and supervision of nursing staff. Carrying out duties and responsibilities in conformance with established routine.
Job Summary:
To assist the nursing staff in performance of routine duties.
Job Duties:
Assume responsibility of administration of medications with exception of the follow:
Can not administer under any circumstances: I.M., I.V., Subq. Medications
Can not receive or write telephone or verbal orders from physician.
Can not administer inhalation medications.
Can not calculate dosage.
Can not order medications from the pharmacy.
Can not administer medications through tube or into any cavity of the body.
Can not apply medication to open wound.
May observe and report any adverse reactions to medications administered.
Set up, administer and record prescribe medications.
Apply ophthalmic, otic, nasal, rectal or vaginal medication when prescribed.
May take vital signs when required to administer medications.
May administer oxygen in case of emergency by nasal cannula and report to charge nurse as soon as possible.
*Chart medications given on medication sheet.
*Document all information specified on control sheet for controlled meds given.
*Complete incident reports on all incidents including errors in medications.
*Fills out and keeps medication sheets in neat and orderly condition for review by charge nurse
*Keep med room neat and in order.
*Know action of medications being administered, its usual range of dosage and it’s side effects and contraindications. Recognize over-dose of drug.
*Consults with Charge Nurse when there is any question about a medication.
*Is completely reliable in reporting medication errors and drug reactions to the Charge nurse and on the patient’s chart.
