Associate Athletic Trainer - Football

Associate Athletic Trainers are responsible for assisting with the health care and performance of football student-athletes. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work on a multidisciplinary team providing the highest possible standard of care for student-athletes while following sports medicines' best practices and NCAA guidelines.
  • Coordinate/oversee/conduct CPR, OSHA, Adult Professional Rescuer, and Sports Safety Training certification courses for staff, students, and coaches; design, implement, and conduct continuing education programs for the Sports Medicine staff/conduct at least three Board of Certification Continuing Education Units (BOC CEU) in-service meetings per semester.
  • Direct the recruitment and retention of undergraduate athletic training aides and assist with the evaluation and involvement of student workers in the department.
  • Support Sports Medicine outreach programs including alumni relations and fundraising activities.
  • Maintain university resources/equipment including AEDs, vehicles, athletic library resources, etc.
  • Review medical transcriptions for accuracy; coordinate the documentation of clearances; complete all follow-up evaluations; and coordinate final review with physicians and staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Several years of experience (typically, 3-5 years of experience) directly related to the position working in the collegiate, professional, and/or clinical field of Sports Medicine.
  • Experience using current manual therapy, modality, and rehabilitation techniques.
  • Experience utilizing an electronic medical records system.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and the Healthcare Provider certification.
  • BOC (Board of Certification) Certified.
  • Valid driver's license and two years of driving experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a field related to the position such as physical therapy, sports medicine or health sciences.
  • Significant experience working in a college and/or professional environment with football athletes in the field of Sports Medicine.
  • Certification in manual therapies and/or instrument-assisted therapies such as dry needling.
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Instructor.

Conditions of Employment:

  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and the Healthcare Provider certification.
  • BOC (Board of Certification) Certified.
  • Eligible for Licensure as an athletic trainer in the State of Virginia.
  • Hours are dictated by athletic schedule, which will require additional hours beyond the typical work week; will be necessary to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Team travel responsibilities throughout the entire year with overnight, weekday, and weekend travel.
  • Must meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Will be exposed to bloodborne and airborne pathogens and must follow OSHA guidelines.
  • Will be exposed to a range of inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Valid driver's license (for driving van/equipment/supplies to various practice and playing fields).
  • This is a restricted position subject to the continued availability of funding.

Job Duties:

70% - Health Care:

  • Direct and coordinate the health care for Football student-athletes.
  • Work in a multidisciplinary team that focuses on the wellness and performance of student-athletes.
  • Provide the highest possible standard of care for all student-athletes while following sports medicine's best practices and NCAA guidelines.
  • Foster a positive environment for student-athletes and the staff in the sports medicine facility to optimize health, wellness, and performance.
  • Work to increase operational efficiency while maximizing the resources of the athletic training program.

15% - Educational Programming:

  • Assist with CPR and Adult or Professional Rescuer and Sports Safety Training certification courses for the athletic staff, students, and coaches.
  • Design, implement, and conduct all continuing education programs for the Sports Medicine staff.
  • Organize or conduct at two three Board of Certification Continuing Education Units (BOC CEU) in-service meetings per semester.
  • Develop innovative and exciting educational opportunities for staff and students.
  • Continuously investigate educational opportunities within the local community.
  • Maintain the sports medicine library in the athletic training room: Ensure all books, tapes, and journals are stored and maintained in a proper and orderly manner; distribute appropriate weekly reading articles and materials to coaches; and develop appropriate resource articles concerning various injuries, their treatment, and rehabilitation.
  • Communicate and collaborate with coaches, athletic performance staff, sports psychology, medical and allied healthcare providers, and other multidisciplinary team members in developing reconditioning, performance, and wellness programming for student-athletes.
  • Conduct OSHA training annually for all athletic training staff and athletic training aides.
  • Coordinate and oversee CPR/First Aid training for the coaches and athletic training staff.

15% - Administrative duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer for Sports Medicine or the Head Athletic Trainer:

  • Summer Camp Coverage: Organize, coordinate, and oversee the staffing and coverage of summer sports camp; develop, distribute, and collect all contacts regarding coverage proposals.
  • Assist with the involvement and evaluation of the student assistants in the department/division (student interns/student workers).
  • Review the documentation of staff Athletic Trainers assigned.
  • Direct the recruitment of and assist with the retention of undergraduate athletic training aides if they become a part of the program:
  • Maintain individual personal files on every athletic training aide.
  • Maintain personal information on every athletic training aide on the computer.
  • Meet with every athletic training aide at the beginning of each semester to discuss the student's goals, academics, and their schedule.
  • Assist with Sports Medicine Outreach Programs including assisting with alumni relations and fundraising activities for Sports Medicine regarding the athletic training programs.
  • Maintain the Exposure Control Plan for the Division of Sports Medicine.
  • Maintain all department AEDs, completing monthly service checks of the continuous operation.
  • Maintain the vehicles used by Sports Medicine including coordinating all repairs, routine maintenance, and filling them with gas.
  • Complete all van use requests in a timely manner.
  • Educate all staff and students on proper accident reporting procedures for university vehicles and vehicle use restrictions.
  • Design and direct the process by which incoming and returning student-athletes are cleared for participation.
  • Coordinate the documentation of clearance and complete all follow-up evaluations of student-athletes with the Insurance and Records Coordinator.
  • Review medical transcriptions of students for accuracy; coordinate the review of all medical documentation with physicians and staff; and review scanned material to ensure that all materials are scanned into the electronic medical record system correctly.
